How to Modify Cheap Digital Camera to View in Infrared Spectrum

Posted by & filed under Video Post 2.

You can modify an inexpensive digital camera by removing the IR blocking filter from the lens element. This modification is useful for viewing infrared actions that are normally invisible to the naked eye.

Our propose of this modification was so that we could see the actual workings of the infrared lasers and sensors used in our Neato robotic vacuum cleaners navigation system. You can see the Robotic vacuum tear down and the final results of our work by watching that involved video here…

IR filters are designed to reflect or block mid-infrared wavelengths while passing visible light. They are used in solid state (CCD or CMOS) video cameras to block IR due to the high sensitivity of many camera sensors to near-infrared light. These filters typically have a blue hue to them as they also sometimes block some of the light from the longer red wavelengths.
