How to Use Windows Cipher to Overwrite Deleted Data – Ask a Tech #11
This nifty little tool was introduced on Windows XP Pro’s CMD line. Useful for completely removing old important data stored on your machine so it can never be recovered through partition recovering applications such as Piriform’s Recuva software.
Especially handy if you are giving your PC away to someone and wish for your data not to be recovered. Just simply type the following command into the Windows CMD prompt using administrator privileges:
” cipher/w:c ” — The last letter being your drives name which in most occurrences being the C:// drive.
This took me at most 10 – 15 minutes to finish and may take you a shorter OR longer time depending on how much data needs to be encrypted.
